2020 College Football Season
The 2020 college football season began in the midst of a once-in-a-century pandemic, COVID-19. Like all other sports, college football was majorly affected by the pandemic, but unlike other professional sports and college basketball, there was zero consensus between leagues during the 2020 off-season. At first, all the leagues were going to play as normally as possible with in-conference or limited non conference games. On July 29, it was announced Notre Dame would join the ACC for the 2020 season only. In August, Conference USA announced a limited schedule, then the MAC, MWC, Big Ten, and Pac-12 announced that the season was going to be postponed. The ACC, SEC and Big 12 later announced they were going to play.
The Big Ten announced on September 16 they would play beginning on October 24, and eventually the PAC-12, MWC and MAC announced limited, conference-only schedules. The College Football Playoff selections were moved back two weeks to December 19 to allow more time for conferences to complete a semblance of a schedule.
Of the games that were played, there were major changes involved. Multiple non-conference rivalries which had been played yearly for decades were cancelled. 139 regular season games were cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19 issues[1] among the teams. This included the Michigan-Ohio State game which was not played for the first time since 1917. The vast majority of games that were played were held with either no fans or greatly reduced capacities. All Pac-12 games were held with no fans, while the Big Ten allowed family members only. Other conferences played with capacities determined by local health authorities or the conferences themselves.
The games on TV were mostly called from home setups, except for major games and sideline reporters. College GameDay and Big Noon Kickoff were held inside the team’s stadiums this season, with Lee Corso making his weekly picks from home. Only a few FCS schools played in the fall, while the vast majority played in the spring (when the FCS playoffs were held). The Ivy League did not play sports at all in the 2020-21 season. Fall FCS games will be included in the main schedule because there were so few of them.
