1984 College Football Season
Regular season
Originally compiled by Jeff79:
- In June 1984, a US Supreme Court ruling ended the control that the NCAA had exercised on televised college football and allowed individual colleges to make their own TV deals.
- CBS obtained rights to Big 10 and Pac 10 home games while ABC obtained rights to the CFA (essentially home games for all schools other than the B10 and P10). CBS also separately obtained rights to BC-Mia and Army-Navy.
- CBS and ABC typically carried only 1-2 games per time slot rather than the frequent large slates of regional games in prior years.
- ESPN carried live CFA games each Saturday typically at noon and 7:30 pm. USA Network also carried games utilizing feeds from various major syndicated packages (USA and ESPN telecasts were usually blacked out in areas airing the game in syndication, though there were multiple occasions where foul-ups resulted in those feeds airing anyway). WTBS carried SEC games, and most other major conferences launched syndicated packages.
- ABC did not carry any games on 9/22 while CBS did not carry any on 10/6.

Sat 12/1, Georgia Tech @ #18 Georgia, WSB-2 Atlanta, 1:30 pm, ??, ??. This game, a Jefferson-Pilot production, aired only on WSB-Atlanta. ABC allowed the game to air and for Auburn-Alabama to be moved to a local independent station after initially insisting that the game leave the air in progress at 3:30 (Georgia having refused to move the game's start time to 12:00). With Georgia Tech up multiple scores late, WSB ended up going to Florida-FSU on time anyway.

Syndicated/cable packages
As compiled by Jimmy Delach:
With the Supreme Court decision being handed down on June 27, conferences and syndicators scrambled to put packages together in time for the season. 1984 was marked by a parade of fly-by-night syndicators and cable start-ups, some of which went under in the middle of the season (see notes above about Mizlou TideVision and Sports View) and others that collapsed in the offseason (Sports Time cable, TCS MetroSports).
The ACC signed a game-of-the-week package with Jefferson-Pilot Productions out of Charlotte.
The Big Ten signed with Sports View, a Nashville-based syndication company, but the company missed its first rights fees payment and didn't finish out the season.
Katz Sports had multiple packages: one for the Big Eight, one for certain Miami road games and their home game with Florida State, and one for Eastern independents (Pitt, Boston College, and Syracuse). Two Big Eight non-conference games (Wisconsin-Missouri and Nebraska-Syracuse) used the Eastern team of Curt Gowdy & Len Dawson for all markets, with Ray Scott & Eddie Crowder getting the week off. In contrast, when a planned Miami-Notre Dame Katz telecast was cancelled when the game was picked up by ESPN, Katz sent its Miami team of Spencer Ross & Steve Grote to call Colorado-Missouri as a separate telecast for the Katz Miami markets.
Raycom had an 8-game package for the Southwest Conference.
TCS/MetroSports had a Pac-10 package, as well as a package for the National Independent Network, which consisted of Notre Dame, Penn State, Rutgers, Temple, & West Virginia.
Sports Time was a St. Louis-based premium cable channel with additional clearances in 15 other states mostly in the Midwest. It advertised that it would air 50 college football games in 1984 with 39 of them being live, and had agreements with the Big Ten, Big Eight, Pac-10, the Katz-associated Eastern independents, the MAC, and the Missouri Valley Conference. About 40 live games are known and some are known to just be rebroadcasts of TCS/Metrosports or Katz games. This list is an attempt to only document live games that were known to be exclusive Sports Time productions or had Sports Time broadcasters.
Home Sports Entertainment--the future Bally's Sports Southwest--had a package of mostly Southwest and Big Eight games selected from the scraps left behind by ABC, ESPN, Raycom, and Katz. It also showed games from other syndicators--this is an attempt to document only HSE-produced original live telecasts.
Home Team Sports, the DMV-based cable sports channel now known as Monumental Sports Network, launched in '84 as a cable home for the Orioles and Bullets, and added a package of college games designed to appeal to the DC-Baltimore-Virginia area.
