Regular season

  • ABC took over Big 10 and Pac-10 rights while CBS got rights to the CFA, a reverse of the setup the previous 3 years.
  • CBS introduced its now-iconic college football theme music this year, that is used on SEC coverage to this day.
  • TBS dropped its national primetime and Big 10 syndication package and focused on afternoon SEC games. USA Network also dropped all college football coverage.

Syndicated packages

Things started to settle for both national and syndicated TV deals.[1]

TBS dropped its syndication packages. The Big Ten moved its syndication process in-house, with every team being guaranteed at least one syndicated game. The package included a pre-game Big Ten Today show hosted by Dave Diles from a Champaign, IL TV studio.

TVEN, which controlled most Eastern independents and the Freedom Football Network, folded. The various Eastern packages unified under Jefferson-Pilot's new Great American Independent Football package. The package covered Army, Boston College, Navy, Notre Dame, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, and West Virginia with TV shares being distributed equally regardless of number of games televised. Penn State, citing a desire for unified kickoff times not subject to change except through CBS, pulled out of syndicated broadcasting altogether.

Raycom discontinued its Big Eight package, citing the sparse area population and lack of cooperation from Oklahoma and Nebraska, who both had radio contracts limiting them to 5 television appearances per season. Oklahoma would only concede 1 road game appearance over each of the last 2 years of the contract. It continued its Southwest package, with the intention of using Bob Carpenter as its play-by-play man. However, a contract dispute and conflicts with Carpenter's duties with the Texas Rangers and MLB on NBC led to him being fired without doing a game, and Raycom pieced together a crew using either Ron Franklin or Phil Stone, depending on Franklin's commitments to Texas Longhorns radio.
