National TV Info

Now for the national TV situation in 2000:
FX: FX is your cable home for Saturday baseball. Coverage begins on April 8, when the Mets host the Dodgers. Games will be shown in the afternoon through May 27, when Fox begins its network OTA coverage. The one exception is May 13, when the Cardinals host the Dodgers at 8PM Eastern. Kenny Albert handles play-by-play except where listed below. Jeff Torborg will be the color commentator through June 3; after that, Ken Brett takes over for the rest of the season. Matt Vasgersian assumes play-by-play duties in September. when Albert is assigned to the NFL on Fox. Times vary by ballpark.
Other play-by-play men used include:
Josh Lewin (April 8 and 15)
Steve Physioc (July 29)
Rich Waltz (August 5)
Vasgersian was also used May 13, June 3, July 8, and July 22.
There was supposed to be a doubleheader on April 22, but the first game (Indians-Red Sox) was rained out. The second game was a simulcast of a team feed, as FX used the Oakland broadcast of Orioles-Athletics at 4PM Eastern. Greg Papa and Ray Fosse called the game.
Fox Sports Net: Coverage begins with the season-opening two-game series between the Mets and the Cubs from the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday, March 29 and Thursday, March 30. First pitch each day is scheduled for 5AM Eastern. Thom Brennaman and Chip Caray will split the play-by-play, with Bob Brenly handling color.
In the first game, Thom called the first four innings and the last two, and Chip had innings five through seven, most likely so he could introduce his grandmother Dutchie as she conducted "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch at his grandfather Harry's restaurant in Chicago. In the second game, Thom called the first three innings and the last three, while Chip called the middle three. They did the seventh inning stretch from New York's Grand Central Station in Game 2.
Regular coverage begins on April 6. There are two games in most weeks. Some are straight doubleheaders, but some seem to be Eastern/Pacific splits. The earliest game almost always begins at 7PM Eastern. There are also quite a few weeks with single games. Here's the approximate breakdown.
Doubleheaders: April 13, May 11, May 18, May 25, June 1, June 15, June 22, June 29, August 3, September 7. September 21, September 28
Eastern/Pacific Split: April 6, April 20, July 6. July 13, July 20, July 27
(I define a doubleheader as two back-to-back windows of at least three hours each. If the second game starts two or two and a half hours after the first one, it seems logical to me- for whatever that's worth- that the second game was shown live from the beginning in the Pacific time zone. Hence the term "Eastern/Pacific split". If I'm on the wrong track, let me know. In case I am, how did they handle the second game? Was it joined in progress once the first game was finished?)
Regional Action: August 17, August 24, August 31, September 14
(This is when both games start no later than an hour apart.)
Single Games: April 27 (Devil Rays-Angels; 10PM Eastern), May 4 (Indians-Blue Jays; 7PM Eastern), June 8 (Astros-Dodgers; 9PM Eastern). August 10 (Padres-Phillies; 7:30 PM Eastern)
Kenny Albert and Jeff Torborg will call the vast majority of the early starts when there are two games in a week. Most of the early starts are at 7PM Eastern. 7:30 PM Eastern starts for early games are April 20 (Phillies-Braves) and August 31 (Reds-Braves). The early start moves to 8PM Eastern for the entire month of July: July 6 (Reds-Cardinals), July 13 (Cardinals-White Sox), July 20 (Reds-Astris), and July 27 (Diamondbacks-Cardinals).
Josh Lewin will fill in for Albert on A's-Indians August 24. Ken Brett will sub for Torborg on Mets-Pirates May 11. Steve Luons will join Kenny and Jeff for Braves-Mets on June 29. Finally, a different crew calls the early tilt on September 7, as Rich Waltz and John Cerutti bring us Mariners-Blue Jays.
The "late" game has many rotating announcers. Play-by-play is split between Josh Lewin and Steve Physioc, with one-shots from Thom Brennaman (Astros-Diamondbacks June 29) and Chip Caray (Cubs-Cardinals September 14). Steve Lyons and Kevin Kennedy handle the analysis. with Torborg filling in for the two single games that start at 9PM Eastern or later. Bob Brenly joins his Fox partner Brennaman for Astros-Diamondbacks June 29. Rex Hudler works with Physioc on Rangers-Angels May 11, and Bob Dernier will be alongside Chip Caray for Cubs-Cardinals September 14.
Late starts are at 10PM Eastern except for the following:
April 6: 9:30 PM Eastern (Phillies-Diamondbacks)
April 13: 10:30 PM Eastern (Dodgers-Giants)
April 20: 9:30 PM Eastern (Rockies-Diamondbacks)
August 17: 7PM Eastern (Rangers-Red Sox)
August 24: 7:30 PM Eastern (Cardinals-Braves)
August 31: 8PM Eastern (Indians-Rangers)
September 14: 8PM Eastern (Cubs-Cardinals)
I might as well throw Big Fox in here, too:
Fox (Network): Saturday afternoon coverage begins May 27. Fox will televise as many as four games a week on a regional basis. Typically, there will be two 1PM Eastern games and two 4PM Eastern games. All regions get one game a week with no doubleheaders. There are various exceptions to this pattern, which will be noted below:
May 27; No 4PM Eastern window; both games at 1PM Eastern
June 10: Three games at 1PM Eastern; one game (Angels-Diamondbacks) at 4PM Eastern
July 8: Three games at 1PM Eastern; one game (Rockies-Angels) at 4PM Eastern
July 29: Three games at 1PM Eastern; one game (White Sox-Angels) at 4PM Eastern
August 12: Three games at 1PM Eastern; one game (Indians-Mariners) at 4PM Eastern
August 26: Only three games; two at 1PM Eastern, one (Yankees-A's) at 4PM Eastern
September 2: Three games at 1PM Eastern; one (Cubs-Giants) at 4PM Eastern
September 9: Only three games; two at 1PM Eastern, one (Padres-Giants) at 4PM Eastern
September 16: Three games at 1PM Eastern; one (Braves-Diamondbacks) at 4PM Eastern
September 23: Only three games; two at 1PM Eastern, one (A's-Mariners) at 4PM Eastern
(I guess there really wasn't much of a pattern, was there?)
Other than the number one team of Joe Buck and Tim McCarver, the only announcer who worked network games without also working cable is analyst Kirk Gibson, who did four games alongside Josh Lewin. Three of them involved the team he worked for normally, the Tigers: at home against the Indians (June 17), at home against the Astros (July 15), and at home against the Red Sox (September 16). His other game was Astros-Braves July 29.
There were a couple of interesting switches as well. On June 24, Buck and McCarver split up. Joe teamed with Kevin Kennedy to call Dodgers-Cardinals in St. Louis, while Tim went to Chicago to call Yankees-White Sox with Chip Caray. Later in the year (September 2), the other playoff crew was split up, Brennaman worked with Torborg on Orioles-Indians, while Brenly worked with Chip on Cubs-Giants.
