Some items of note:

Fox no longer sublets out games to its Cable subsidiaries; Fox Family or FX. So the national cable telecasts are exclusively with ESPN and ESPN2. ESPN now adds a Wednesday matinee game.

Speaking of Fox Family, in 2001 ownership transferred to ABC/Disney and the channel was renamed ABC Family. However, the channel technically still had rights to the LDS for 2002. This sticky situation was rectified by Disney having ESPN produce all LDS telecasts complete with ESPN on-air talent, along with ESPN graphics and ESPN flag-ID microphones and then airing the games on ABC Family. As such, the listings for the LDS games will show the carrier as ABC Family, since in fact, that's where you would find the telecasts.

I don't have as much time today as I've had in the last few weeks, so I'm going to jump ahead to the final year of this project, 2002, By now, the vast majority of the information found in the articles was in table form; there are no sponsor lists, and announcers aren't mentioned anywhere, either. It's just a list of how many games each affiliate broadcasts.

We begin with American League radio. Listed stations broadcast all regular-season games unless otherwise noted:

EAST:

Orioles: WBAL-AM (1090) is the flagship of a twenty-six station network. This is the third year of a five-year contract.

Red Sox: WEEI-AM (850) heads a fifty-five station network. This is the second year of a six0year contract.

Yankees: WCBS-AM (880) heads z thirty-eight station network. This is the first year of a five-year contract.

Toronto Blue Jays: CJCL-AM (590) leads a thirty-station network. This is the first year of a two-year contract.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays: WFLA-AM (970) is the flagship of an eleven-station network. This is the fifth year of a seven-year contact.

Note: Rogers Communications, which owns the Blue Jays, will buy CJCL in the near future, according to the table.

CENTRAL:

White Sox: WMVP-AM (1000) heads a thirty-four station network. This is the seventh year of a ten-year contract.

Indians: WTAM-AM (1100) is the flagship of a thirty-eight station network. This is the first year of a five-year contract.

Tigers: WXYT-AM (1270) leads a thirty-one station network. This is the second year of a six-year contract.

Kansas City Royals: KMBZ-AM (980) is the flagship of a sixty-five station network. This is the second year of a three-year contract.

Twins: WCCO-AM (830) is the head of a forty-nine station network. This is the fourth year of a five-year contract.

WEST:

Anaheim Angels: KLAC-AM (570) heads a seven-station network, This is the fourth year of a five-year contract.

Oakland Athletics: KFRC-AM (610) is the flagship of a twenty-four station network. This is the first year of a four-year contract.

Seattle Mariners: KIRO-AM (710) leads a forty-five station network. This is the final year f a five-year contract.

Now let's move the dial to the National League:

EAST:

Atlanta Braves: WSB-AM (750) is the flagship of a network numbering 172 stations. This is the third year of a five-year contract.

Florida Marlins: WQAM-AM (560) leads a seven-station network. They're currently on a one-year contract.

Montreal Expos: CKAC-AM (730) is the head of a twenty-station French-language network; CKGM-AM (980) is the lone English-language station carrying the team. Both are in the second year of two-year contracts.

Here's the national broadcasting outlook for 2002:

ESPN: Sunday Night Baseball begins its thirteenth season on March 31 in Anaheim, when the Angels host the Indians. Jon Miller and Joe Morgan will be on the call. (If my memory's right, the game will air on ESPN2 due to a conflict with the NCAA Women's Basketball National Championship Game.) ESPN will now have a tripleheader on Wednesdays with the introduction of an afternoon game. There will also be a regular game on Monday nights, along with a tripleheader on Opening Day (April 1) and wall-to-wall coverage on the three major summer holidays: Memorial Day (May 27), July 4, and Labor Day (September 2). Also, there will be plenty of pennant race coverage in September, culminating on the last day of the season with coverage of as many relevant games as humanly possible, both live and through look-ins.)

(There will also be extra games at random points in the schedule; back in those days, ESPN seemingly aired baseball whenever they could find a slot and a game to put in it; now, even SNB seems like a chore.)
