National TV/Radio Info

Originally written by garretta

For whatever reason. both copies of the 1980 article that I've found online cut off after the first two pages, which focus almost entirely on the increase in national television money. But there were a few interesting tidbits, mostly about CBS Radio's coverage. Here we go:

CBS Radio: Game coverage starts with the July 8 All-Star Game from Los Angeles. Vin Scully and Brent Musburger will be on the call. Coverage of the NLCS between the Astros and the Phillies begins October 7 from Philadelphia, with Jack Buck and Jerry Coleman on the call. The ALCS between the Yankees and the Royals starts the following afternoon from Kansas City. Ernie Harwell and Curt Gowdy will call that series. The World Series between the Royals and the Phillies begins October 14 at Veterans Stadium; Scully will be joined by Tigers manager Sparky Anderson. Win Elliot will handle postgame interviews.

Ancillary programming begins with Baseball Preview, a five-part special from March 31 to April 4 in which Gowdy will cover the final week of spring training and offer predictions about the upcoming pennant races. Pennant Race Fever is a similar show that will air during the last week of the season, as Gowdy covers the pennant races in each division. Finally, Elliot will host The Wonderful World of Baseball during the weekend of October 10-11. (I think they did that feature at least once before; it was a rather generic series covering baseball's best moments and personalities to date. If I'm wrong, please tell me.)

(There's no evidence that CBS Radio broadcast the one-game playoff for the National League West between the Astros and the Dodgers on October 6 in Los Angeles, but it stands to reason that they did. Hopefully the broadcast is out there and will come to light someday.)

There's also a brief blurb about the new three-year contract that the world champion Pirates signed with KDKA-AM over the winter.

Now for national TV in 1980:

ABC: ABC has limited Monday Night Baseball to five weeks in June, and will run the rest of their package on Sunday afternoons beginning August 17 and continuing for the rest of the season. At the start of the season, ABC told Broadcasting that the Monday night games would start at 8:30 PM Eastern and the Sunday games would start a 3PM Eastern. They were right about the Monday games, but the Sunday starts were all over the map, as early as 1PM Eastern (the Astros played the Cubs at Wrigley Field on August 31) and as late as 3:30 (they featured the "Billyball" Athletics at home against the Orioles on August 24). ABC also had the rights to any one-game playoffs that needed to be contested, and one was needed on October 6, as the Astros beat the Dodgers in Los Angeles to win the National League West.

Keith Jackson and Al Michaels more or less split the primary play-by-play duties; each got a single telecast to open the season on June 2 and 9 (Al on the second, Keith on the ninth) alongside Bob Uecker and Lou Brock, who was dropped after three weeks. Don Drydale and Howard Cosell returned on June 16. and Keith and Al shared custody of Howard until football season started.

If you think like ABC Sports undoubtedly did and proclaim Howard's game the A game, Al had the top Monday night games the last three weeks in June, then had three A games to Keith's two on Sundays until Howard left for MNF. It's hard to tell which game is the A game the last three weeks of September since both National League races were so close, but Astros-Dodgers was the standalone on October 5.

(By the way, I know why Cosell wasn't there for the last two games in Los Angeles, but where was Drysdale? I'm not sure if he was working for the Angels or the White Sox, but whichever one it was wasn't going anywhere, just like Uecker's Brewers. They should have at least flown him in for the playoff game, especially since he was doing the NLCS.)

Keith, Don, and Howard did the NLCS between the Phillies and Astros beginning October 7, while Al was joined by special guests Jim Palmer and Billy Martin for the ALCS between the Yankees and the Royals beginning October 8. Steve Zabriskie was a dugout reporter for Game 4 of the NLCS, while Jim Lampley called Reds-Astros on September 28 alongside Uecker. (It seemed for a few weeks like they were thinking about using Uecker on one of the LCSs, but decided against it; he was on as many A games as Drysdale was in September,)

All five of the main broadcasters worked the All-Star Game in Los Angeles on July 8: Keith called the first four and a half innings alongside Don and Howard, while Al called the last four and a half. Uecker handled player interviews.

Sponsors include Chevrolet, Miller Beer, Pepsi, Allstate Insurance, and Texaco.

NBC: The Game of the Week will air every Saturday beginning April 12. Sponsors include Miller Beer, Gillette, Pepsi, Allstate, Black and Decker, Borden, J.C. Penney, Firestone, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Joe Garagiola and Tony Kubek will announce the main games, with Merle Harmon and former umpire Ron Luciano calling the backup games.

Three games will be telecast on July 5, and there will be a doubleheader on June 14, with the first game beginning at 1:15 PM Eastern and the second at 4PM Eastern. Jay Randolph and Bobby Valentine will call Rangers-Blue Jays that day, while Bob Costas and Tim McCarver will call Red Sox-Angels. There will also be a special Tuesday night telecast on September 9, with first pitch at 8:15 PM Eastern.

On October 4, Costas and Valentine will call Tigers-Yankees, while Dick Enberg replaces Harmon alongside Luciano for Astros-Dodgers, which will be joined in progress afterward. (Are we sure about Enberg? I know for a fact that he and Merlin Olsen called Steelers-Vikings the next day. Los Angeles to Minneapolis isn't an impossible overnight flight, but to use Dick when you know he has a football game the next day and give both Joe and Tony the weekend off makes no sense to me.)

(Also, was the July 5 telecast a doubleheader, with Astros-Reds joined in progress, or a threw-way regional split?)

The World Series between the Royals and the Phillies begins October 14 in Philadelphia. Garagiola and Kubek will be joined in the booth by special guest Tom Seaver. Sponsors include Miller Beer, Gillette. Pepsi, Allstate Insurance, and RCA. (I know Beyant Gumbel did the pregame show from Philadelphia for Games 1 and 6, but I also know he was back in the studio for Game 5 because of NFL '80. The rest of the series I'm not sure about. He hosted the trophy presentation, as we talk about below. On the pregame show, he was joined by co-hosts Bob Gibson and Ron Luciano. Merle Harmon was used as a field reporter.

USA: Games air every Thursday night. There's a doubleheader most weeks; Monte Moore calls the west coast games, with Maury Wills and Wes Parker alternating as analysts. Jim Woods calls the east coast games; his main partner is Nellie Briles, but Steve Grad, Bob Prince, Rico Petrocelli, and Ned Martin all filled in at times during the season. There will be a special Friday night doubleheader on October 3, with Phillies-Expos airing at 7:30 PM Eastern and Astros-Dodgers airing at 10:30 PM Eastern.
