NBC was carrying the Summer Olympics (yes, Summer) in Seoul and with the majority of their sportscasters in South Korea, veteran sportscasters such as Chuck Thompson, Ray Scott, and the return of Curt Gowdy and Al DeRogatis were called upon to fill in for a few weeks.

Dan Jiggetts was a last-minute replacement for Hank Stram after Stram collapsed the day before the CHI-IND game. Stram would undergo open-heart surgery and would not return to the broadcast booth until Week 7.
