As originally posted by hawkhawg40 on the old message board in 2008:

On the NFL side,'62 was a watershed year, as CBS finally had all the NFL under its wing.  Prior to '62, NBC had the contract for Steelers and Colts home games with Lindsey Nelson and Frankie Albert.  At the owners meetings, everybody else had signed on with CBS, but Art Rooney had a handshake deal with NBC, and to Art-a deal was a deal.  Carroll Rosenbloom and Art Modell were sent in to try to convince Rooney to join them at CBS, but he wouldn't budge until NBC execs were brought in to tell Art that it was OK to break the deal."

Notes:

Per the 1962 Redskins Media Guide, the Colts & Redskins had a co-op arrangement for 1962. In this instance, the LA-BAL game was seen thruout the former vast Redskins network that extended all the way to the Florida Keys, while the WSH-DAL was seen only on Channel 9 in the DC viewing area. Though unable to verify, I would believe that the WTOP-only telecasts were treated as though it was a normal CBS telecast. As the season progresses, we'll see how the pattern works out.

The NY-CLE game marks Pat Summerall's debut as an NFL game commentator. The start of an amazing career.
