1987 NFL Season
As originally written by Jimmy Delach and Tim Brulia:
The networks sign a three-year contract with the NFL, with a new addition. For the first time, the NFL includes a cable deal as ESPN signs on for Sunday night games, starting with Week 9. Since some markets still do not have full cable penetration, the NFL stipulates that both visiting and home team (as long as the blackout rules are met) markets must have one OTA channel carry the game. ESPN is not a part of playoff coverage, but will televise the Pro Bowl. ABC, NBC and CBS will each televise one Super Bowl as part of the agreement.
