Another note is that, for the first time, cable channels become involved in coverage. The new ESPN network dips its toes and UA-Columbia, later to be re-branded as the USA Network, compliments the coverage by the syndicated Hughes Sports Network, which in turn, takes over coverage as the NHL dissolves its own syndicated package of games.
