As originally written by Jeff Haggar

In this thread, I will re-post my (slightly updated) research on Masters TV history which I previously posted on DBS Forums. For each year, I will list the TV schedule along with the announcers I have uncovered from newspaper archives, books, and footage.

Note: A few years ago, CBS put out a press release http://www.cbspressexpress.com/cbs-news/releases/view?id=9204 to document historical Masters announcers, but that listing contains numerous errors. I will summarize the discrepancies between that listing and my research.

Note: My announcer listing is not necessarily complete, but represents the commentators for which I have found evidence. Therefore, when I do not list an announcer and the CBS press release does, it is possible that the CBS release is correct in some cases. But that listing contains so many blatant errors, that I don't consider it very reliable at all.

Finally, I certainly appreciate any additions/corrections to the info in this thread.

1956

CBS, Fri 4/6, 5-5:30 pm ... Sat 4/7, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/8, 5-6 pm

Chris Schenkel, Bud Palmer

- The CBS press release shows Jones and Roberts (which sounds very questionable) and does not list Schenkel and Palmer.

- CBS aired Friday coverage the first two years.

1957

CBS, Fri 4/5, 5-5:30 pm ... Sat 4/6, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/7, 5-6 pm

Jim McKay, Bud Palmer

1958

CBS, Sat 4/5, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/6, 4:30-6 pm

Jim McKay, John Derr

1959

CBS, Sat 4/4, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/5, 4:30-6 pm

Jim McKay, Jim McArthur

- The CBS press release also lists Schenkel and Derr.

1960

CBS, Sat 4/9, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/10, 4-5:30 pm

Jim McKay, Jim McArthur, Art Wall

- A few years ago, CBS rebroadcast footage from the 1960 Masters and these were the only three announcers who appeared on that footage. The CBS press release does not list Wall, so that is a clear error. That press release also lists Schenkel and Derr. The CBS press release lists Schenkel at 18 and McKay at 17 However, McKay was clearly at 18 on the CBS footage and Schenkel was nowhere to be found.

1961 - Jim McKay, Jim McArthur, Tom Harmon

CBS - Sat 4/8, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/9, 4-5:30 pm ... Mon 4/10 (Mon finish due to rain), 5-6 pm

- The CBS press release also has Schenkel and Derr and does not have Harmon.

- CBS typically aired only 2.5 hours of coverage in this era.

1962 - Chris Schenkel, Jim McArthur, John Derr

CBS - Sat 4/7, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/8, 4-5:30 pm ... Mon 4/9 (playoff), 5-6 pm

- The CBS press release lists McKay from 1962-1965. However, McKay worked for ABC at that time.

- The CBS press release also has Nelson.

- CBS aired one hour of coverage of the 18-hole playoff on Monday.

1963 - Chris Schenkel, Jack Drees, John Derr

CBS - Sat 4/6, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/7, 4-5 pm

- The CBS press release also has Nelson and McArthur and does not have Drees.

1964 - Chris Schenkel, Jack Whitaker, John Derr, Byron Nelson

CBS - Sat 4/11, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/12, 4-5:30 pm

- The CBS press release also has McArthur and does not list Whitaker.

1965 - Jack Whitaker, Jack Drees, John Derr, Cary Middlecoff, Byron Nelson

CBS - Sat 4/10, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/11, 4-5:30 pm

- The CBS press release also has McArthur and does not list Drees.

1966 - Jack Whitaker, Jack Drees, John Derr, Cary Middlecoff, Henry Longhurst

CBS - Sat 4/9, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/10, 4-5:30 pm ... Mon 4/11 (playoff), 5-6 pm

- This was the first Masters telecast in color.

- The CBS press release also shows Nelson.

1967 - Bruce Bryant, Billy Joe Patton, Ted O'Connell, Chuck McAbee, Bill McPhail, Charlie Coe

CBS - Sat 4/8, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/9, 4-5:30 pm

- The above crew worked due to the AFTRA strike. The NY Times says that the following crew was originally scheduled:

John Derr, Jack Drees, Henry Longhurst, Cary Middlecoff, Byron Nelson, Jack Whitaker (Note: I am quite sure the Whitaker listing is incorrect. See the Whitaker comment under 1968.)

- The CBS press release missed the boat here (showing the scheduled crew rather than the actual crew).

1968 - Pat Summerall, Frank Glieber, John Derr, Cary Middlecoff, Henry Longhurst, Jay Randolph, Byron Nelson, Frank Gifford

CBS - Sat 4/13, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/14, 4-5:30 pm

- The CBS press release also lists Drees.

- The CBS press release inexplicably lists Whitaker for 1968-1971, but Whitaker was banned by Augusta during these years after the infamous "mob" comment he made in 1966.

1969 - Pat Summerall, Frank Glieber, John Derr, Cary Middlecoff, Henry Longhurst, Ray Scott, Frank Gifford

CBS - Sat 4/12, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/13, 4-5:30 pm

- The CBS press release lists Randolph from 1969-1978, but he worked for NBC at that time.

- The CBS press release also lists Drees and Nelson.

1970 - Ray Scott, Frank Glieber, John Derr, Pat Summerall, Henry Longhurst, Bob Ferrier

CBS - Sat 4/11, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/12, 4-5:30 pm ... Mon 4/13 (playoff), 4:30-???

- The CBS press release also lists Drees, Gifford, Middlecoff, and Nelson and does not list Ferrier.

1971 - Ray Scott, Frank Glieber, John Derr, Pat Summerall, Henry Longhurst, Bob Ferrier

CBS - Sat 4/10, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/11, 4-5:30 pm

- The CBS press release also lists Drees, Gifford, Middlecoff, and Nelson.

1972 - Ray Scott, Frank Glieber, John Derr, Pat Summerall, Jack Whitaker, Bob Ferrier

CBS - Sat 4/8, 5-6 pm ... Sun 4/9, 4-5:30 pm

- Longhurst came up ill, so CBS got permission from Cliff Roberts to reinstate the previously banned Whitaker to the broadcast crew to replace Longhurst.

- The CBS press release lists Gifford from 1972-1978, but he worked for ABC at that time.

- The CBS press release also lists Drees, Middlecoff, and Nelson.

1973 - Ray Scott, Frank Glieber, John Derr, Pat Summerall, Henry Longhurst, Jack Whitaker, Ben Wright

CBS - Sat 4/7, 4:30-6 pm (rain) ... Sun 4/8, 3:30-5:30 pm ... Mon 4/9 (Mon finish due to rain), 4:30-?? pm

- The CBS press release also lists Drees, Middlecoff, and Nelson.

1974 - Ray Scott, Frank Glieber, Pat Summerall, Henry Longhurst, Jack Whitaker, Ben Wright, Jim Thacker

CBS - Sat 4/13, 4:30-6 pm ... Sun 4/14, 4-6 pm

- The CBS press release also lists Middlecoff and Nelson and does not list Longhurst, Whitaker, Wright, or Thacker.

1975 - Vin Scully, Frank Glieber, Pat Summerall, Henry Longhurst, Jack Whitaker, Ben Wright, Jim Thacker

CBS - Sat 4/12, 4:30-6 pm ... Sun 4/13, 4-6 pm

- The CBS press release does not list Scully from 1975-78 even though he was the lead CBS announcer at 18 those years.

- The CBS press release lists Scott from 1975-78 even though he no longer worked for CBS.

- The CBS press release also lists Middlecoff and Nelson and does not list Longhurst, Whitaker, Wright, or Thacker

1976 - Vin Scully, Frank Glieber, Pat Summerall, Henry Longhurst, Jack Whitaker, Ben Wright, Jim Thacker

USA - Thu 4/10 4-6 pm ... Fri 4/11, 4-6 pm

CBS - Sat 4/12, 3:30-6 pm ... Sun 4/13, 3-6 pm

- CBS rebroadcast footage of this Masters a few years ago and the CBS press release is clearly wrong on a few points here: Nantz was on 16, not 17, Lundquist was on 17, not 14, McCord was on 14. Wright was on 15 only.

- Interestingly, when CBS aired this footage, they only included one shot from hole 14 and that footage did not include any audio from McCord. It seemed as if CBS went out of its way (or perhaps was instructed by Augusta officials) to not include any mention of McCord on this rebroadcast.
