2022 NCAA softball tournament commentators

NOTE: While a lot of what unfolds on this wiki in the next months will be new, this is especially so — as far as I know, this is the first thread posted exclusively on this wiki and not the message board. So if something looks weird, say so.

Sixty-four teams qualify for the 2022 NCAA Division I Softball Tournament.

The qualifiers are grouped into 16 four-team, double-elimination brackets. Regional winners advance to eight best-of-three super regionals. Super regional winners advance to the Women's College World Series at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla., which consist of two four-team brackets and a best-of-three championship series.

The qualifiers will be announced Sunday night, May 15, at 7 p.m. EDT on ESPN2. (Bigddan11 has his usual detailed coverage of conference-tournament broadcasting and streaming on his blog.)

The top 16 seeds will host, provided they submit a bid; this is a return to the 2019 structure after the 2020 tournament was canceled and the 2021 tournament had predetermined sites to facilitate COVID testing.

ESPN handles the production at all 25 host sites, which makes this easier to track but also less fun to track than when schools could produce their own broadcasts. That's 126 to 153 total possible games.

All 16 sites are scheduled to run from Friday to Sunday, although that can change if a school with a policy against playing on Sunday gets into the tournament. (BYU, which famously can't play on Sunday, is the primary team that creates issues here, but BYU missed the tournament this year.)

There are 44 windows on ESPN's linear schedules for the first weekend, although this total is subject to change. The regional weekend will include anywhere from 96 to 112 games, all of which will be available on ESPN+ if they aren't televised on a linear network (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network, ACC Network or Longhorn Network). This is a change from past years as the games move behind the ESPN+ paywall and off of ESPN3.

All 30 to 41 games from the super regionals forward are televised.

The bracket play at the final site in Oklahoma City moves from its old four-day format (four games on Thursday, two on Friday, four on Saturday and anywhere from two to four on Sunday) to a five-day format (four games on Thursday, three on each of the next two days, then anywhere from two to four on Monday). This is done to eliminate the chance that a team in the elimination bracket has to play four games in a 36-hour span. It also gives the tournament and ESPN a little more flexibility in scheduling, which tends to come up since the tournament is played in Tornado Alley in early June.

Games preceded by a hyphen are elimination games; games preceded by a plus sign are elimination games only for the second team listed in that matchup. All schedules are subject to change based on the whims of Mother Nature, ESPN, and extra innings in preceding games. All times are Eastern and PM unless noted. Beware of dog.

Regionals

The regional round runs from Friday, May 20 to Sunday, May 22, with Monday, May 23 available if there are weather issues. Kris Budden, Jessica Mendoza and Jen Schroeder are the studio hosts on 7Innings Live Presented By Capital One, which airs all day on ESPN+. Matt Schick handles studio updates.

ESPN's standard first-pitch time is :04 after the hour for broadcasts that start at the top of the hour.
