2019 French Open

The second Grand Slam of the 2019 tennis season begins Sunday in Paris, on the red dust of Stade Roland Garros. (It's popularly called "clay," but it's brick dust over limestone on top of volcanic rock, all above a three-foot layer of sand.) For the fourth straight year, Tennis Channel is the exclusive home of cable coverage while NBC steps in on the weekends.

The French Open is the only major that starts on Sunday, which it's done annually since 2006. That makes it a 15-day event, with the first round of singles action spread out over three days. NBC is not airing any matches on the opening Sunday as they take over rights to the Indianapolis 500.

It's also the only major with no lights or roofs. (Wimbledon does have lights, but only with the roof in use.) Court Philippe-Chatrier is slated to get a roof before 2020.

The two smaller stadiums are Court Suzanne-Lenglen and Court Simone-Mathieu, followed by Courts 1, 2 and 3.

The mixed doubles final is set for Thursday, with men's doubles and women's singles on Saturday before men's singles and women's doubles on Sunday.

Tennis Channel's press release is at http://tennischannel.wpengine.com/press_releases/tennis-channel-tennis-channel-plus-to-show-up-to-12-courts-per-day-at-2019-french-open/ . The network is debuting a new set in Court Philippe-Chatrier and will be one of two networks with a booth in Court Simonne-Mathieu, the new no. 3 stadium.

Tennis Channel plans more than 120 hours of live matches during the French Open, and close to 350 hours including encore coverage overall during the two-week main draw.

Commentators

Tennis Channel analysts include Martina Navratilova, Jim Courier, Tracy Austin, Lindsay Davenport, James Blake, Chanda Rubin and Paul Annacone.

Match-callers include Ted Robinson, Ian Eagle, Bill Macatee, Leif Shiras and Jimmy Arias. Mary Carillo returns as herself. Brett Haber and Steve Weissman host studio coverage and Jon Wertheim is the reporter at large.

NBC details its coverage plans at http://nbcsportsgrouppressbox.com/2019/05/22/mike-tirico-and-dan-hicks-join-nbc-sports-presentation-of-2019-french-open-from-roland-garros/ .

The big news on this front is twofold; as mentioned above, the Indy 500 pre-empts coverage on the opening Sunday, and Ted Robinson is out after 20 years as NBC's tennis voice. Mary Carillo will handle PBP alongside John McEnroe for the opening telecast on Memorial Day. Mike Tirico takes over PBP duties with Carillo sliding into an analyst role in a three-person booth for the middle weekend, and Dan Hicks will do PBP for the semifinals and finals.

The peacock picks up two hours of coverage on the middle weekend, when they will come on at 11 a.m. rather than noon, according to the release. This is not reflected in my EPG.
