2019 Australian Open

As originally written by Tony Miller:

The year's first Grand Slam tennis event begins Sunday evening in the U.S. and Monday morning in Australia. The ESPN family of networks and Tennis Channel split coverage in America, with ESPN2 carrying the bulk of the linear television load.

The grid below shows the TV schedule for the fortnight -- as of this writing, the last 10 days of Tennis Channel are actually copied and pasted from last year. Because of the time difference -- Melbourne is 16 hours ahead of EST and 19 ahead of PST -- each day of play begins the night before and runs into the morning hours in the Americas.

Broadcast Schedule

Saturday 1/27    Sunday.....[3:30-6:30 a.m.]  11 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Mixed doubles final (11); men's final (3:30)

ESPN's portion of the schedule is exactly the same as last year, with 99.5 hours on ESPN2 and 10 -- the men's singles semifinals and both singles finals -- on ESPN. Tennis Channel lost half an hour -- they added 60 minutes at the end of their window on Wednesday the 24th, but trimmed 90 minutes off the end of the next night.

The tournament plays out on 16 courts in Melbourne Park. Three of the courts -- Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Arena and Margaret Court Arena -- have retractable roofs. All of the courts have lights.

Rod Laver Arena seats 14,820. Melbourne Arena, which was known as Hisense Arena until the naming rights expired in August, seats 10,500. Margaret Court Arena seats 7,500, while Show Courts 2 and 3 each seat 3,000. (Margaret Court Arena was originally Show Court 1.)

Commentators

ESPN's coverage includes host Chris McKendry; match-callers Chris Fowler, Cliff Drysdale and Patrick McEnroe; and three people who basically do everything in Darren Cahill, Jason Goodall and Pam Shriver. Cahill has only worked men's matches since he became Simona Halep's coach in 2016, but he stepped down from Team Halep in November, so it remains to be seen what ESPN will do with him.

The remaining analysts are Chrissie Evert, Mary Joe Fernandez, Brad Gilbert, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, John McEnroe, Patrick Moratoglou and Rennae Stubbs.

Fernandez returns to the lineup after being absent from last year's telecasts. Moratoglou will be coaching Serena Williams this year after she was on maternity leave last January, but as noted above, Cahill no longer has coaching duties. Other than that, it's the same ESPN lineup we've come to expect. They did throw in some Luke Jensen and Mark Woodforde last year, too.

Tennis Channel's programming is hosted by Brett Haber in Melbourne alongside analysts Jim Courier, Martina Navratilova and Jon Wertheim. Steve Weissman, Tracy Austin and Jimmy Arias will appear from Los Angeles. Lindsay Davenport, Paul Annacone and Bill Macatee are also on-site Down Under.

Macatee is "continuing his role as lead broadcaster," which strikes me as odd given that he's the last person introduced in the press release, while Haber will work as a play-by-play announcer for "various matches."

As merfster noted, ESPN2 did not show any of the Konta/Muguruza match, which started at 8:30 a.m. EST (12:30 local time) and finished at 11:12 (3:12). That was the latest start ever to an Australian Open women's singles match.

According to Deadspin, which cited a BBC tweet, the tournament organizers wanted to move Konta/Muguruza to Show Court 3, which had been open for more than three hours before the match actually started. They couldn't, however, as the tournament didn't have enough staff to clean the bird poop off that court.

I swear I did not make that up.
