The second Grand Slam of the 2018 tennis season begins Sunday in Paris, on the red dust of Stade Roland Garros. (It's popularly called "clay," but it's brick dust over limestone on top of volcanic rock, all above a three-foot layer of sand.) For the third straight year, Tennis Channel is the exclusive home of cable coverage while NBC steps in on the weekends.
The French Open is the only major that starts on Sunday, which it's done annually since 2006. That makes it a 15-day event, with the first round of singles action spread out over three days.

Tennis Channel Plus -- Tennis Channel's subscription service -- extends its coverage from five courts to 10 this year. The press release boasts more then 350 matches and 700 hours of coverage including online and qualifying, where TC Plus aired all 196 matches live and Tennis Channel aired four days of taped highlights.
My math shows Tennis Channel with 107 hours of linear TV during the main draw, with NBC showing 15 hours live in all time zones and 9 more that are live in ET only.
Commentators
Tennis Channel's analysts include Hall of Famers Martina Navratilova, Jim Courier, Tracy Austin and Lindsay Davenport, along with Justin Gimelstob, James Blake, Paul Annacone and Chanda Rubin. Mary Carillo returns in her hybrid reporter-anchor-interviewer role. The play-by-play staff includes Bill Macatee, Ted Robinson and Ian Eagle in addition to Leif Shiras, Steve Weissman and host Brett Haber. Sports Illustrated's Jon Wertheim and Entertainment Tonight's Kevin Frazier round out the on-air team.
NBC enlists the services of Ted Robinson, John McEnroe and Carillo.
Last year's tournament used 15 courts: Court Philippe-Chatrier seats 14,840 while Court Suzanne-Lenglen seats 10,068. The remaining 13 courts were numbered 1-6, 8, 10, and 14-18. This year's qualifying tournaments have included courts 7, 9, and 11-13, but not Court 17.

The Meteo France weather forecast is ... not good. Google Translate says "rare showers" from 5-8 a.m. EDT, then "risk of hail" until 5 p.m. EDT.
The schedule would end up consisting of, in effect, six full-blown singles matches and two partial matches.
At 9:19, about 45 minutes before her match with Maria Sharapova would have started, Serena Williams withdrew from the tournament with a pectoral injury sustained on Saturday and aggravated in doubles yesterday.
The Wozniacki-Kasatkina match took all of 16 minutes and three games to complete. It was shown in its entirety.
The Muguruza-Tsurenko match lasted 20 minutes and two games before Tsurenko pulled her hamstring and retired. It was not shown live at all since it came late in the fourth/early in the fifth set of the Cilic-Fognini match.
