notes

The 125s aired on 2/14.

Because it was a slightly interesting broadcasting situation, I made an editorial decision to list both days of coverage for the March Atlanta race. It was scheduled for ABC, but all they got was coverage of rain. Arute was on that telecast. For the race on Monday the 9th on ESPN, Dunlap replaced Arute. It appears Arute was one of the dwindling few who was on an ABC Sports-exclusive contract.

The Pepsi 400 at Daytona was originally set to be a landmark telecast for NASCAR. Daytona Intl Speedway had installed lights. One of the benefits of this was they could now beat the early July heat far better than they ever could than with their heretofore traditional 10 AM/11 AM starts for the 400. The first Saturday in July happened to be the 4th in 1998, and CBS ponied up to air this race as the first network televised prime time NASCAR race. Alas, wildfires hit Central Florida, and they had to move the race to the last open weekend of the season, after Talladega in October. CBS owned TNN picked up the rescheduled race, and NASCAR's network prime time debut had to wait until 1999.

The Motegi race was the last of the three post-season exhibitions in Japan. NASCAR hasn't been back since.
