notes
The Twin 125s aired on 2/13.
The Atlanta spring race, scheduled for 3/21 for airing on ABC, was snow delayed for a week. TNN picked up the delayed telecast.
Neil Bonnett participated in the 7/18 Pocono broadcast. Six days prior, while testing a car at Talladega with his son David, Bonnett pulled his mentor Red Farmer out of a crashed helicopter. Farmer would survive the accident. Unfortunately, the pilot of the helicopter, Davey Allison, was pronounced dead the following day. This, along with defending NASCAR Cup champion Alan Kulwicki's death from a plane crash on the night of 4/1, cast a huge pall on the season. It would compound with the deaths of Bonnett himself and Rodney Orr the following February at Daytona.
With Bonnett making a return to competitive racing after three years, CBS had the idea to use Bonnett as an in-race commentator...as in, they wanted to talk to him while under green flag conditions. They tried this once, and suffice it to say it did not work. They talked to him a couple of times during caution flags, a familiar staple of modern-day broadcasts. As it was, he ended up crashing spectacularly into the catchfence. Thankfully he was not hurt, and he would subsequently return to the booth to call the remainder of the race.
